Roots & Roads ന്റെ ജൂലൈ പതിനാറിനുള്ള വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായൽ പഠനയാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുവാനുള്ള അവസരം എനിക്ക് കിട്ടി. വേമ്പനാട്ടുകായൽ എന്ന് പറയുമ്പോൾ നീലക്കൊടിവേലി ഒഴുകിയിരുന്ന മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെ തീരത്ത് ജനിച്ചു വളർന്ന എനിക്ക് മീനച്ചിലാർ ഒഴുകി ചെല്ലുന്ന സ്ഥലം എന്നതാണ് മനസ്സിൽ ഉള്ളത്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും നീളം കൂടിയതും കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ തടാകവും ഇതാണെന്ന് സ്കൂളിൽ പഠിച്ച ഓർമ്മ. ഇതായിരുന്നു എനിക്കറിയാവുന്ന വേമ്പനാട്ടുകായലിന്റെ ചരിത്രം. അതിലും ഒരുപാടൊരുപാടുണ്ടെന്ന് എന്ന് ഈ യാത്ര പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. രാവിലെ എട്ടരയ്ക്ക് കോടിമതയിൽ നിന്ന് യാത്ര തുടങ്ങി. കായൽ, ചിറ കെട്ടി കൃഷിക്കായി നിലമാക്കിയത് രാജീവ് സാർ വിശദമായി തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു തന്നു.എം സി റോഡിന് സമാന്തരമായി ജലത്തിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് അന്ത്യശ്വാസം വലിക്കുന്ന ട്രാവൻകൂർ സിമന്റ്സും കണ്ട്‌ മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെയും കൊടൂരാറിന്റെയും സംഗമസ്ഥാനവും കണ്ടു.പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ മേഖലയിൽ ഒരു കോട്ടയുണ്ടായിരുന്നെന്നും അതിൻറെ അവസാന ഭാഗത്ത് ഇപ്പോൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന മുത്തൻ മുത്തി (ഗോത്രവർഗ്ഗക്കാർ ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്ന) പാറയും കണ്ടു. ഈ കോട്ട എനിക്ക് വളരെ ഒരു അത്ഭുതമായിരുന്നു. തിരുവായ്ക്കരിപ്പാടശേഖരത്തിന് നടുവിൽ ഒരു ദ്വീപ് ഉണ്ടെന്നും അവിടെ വലിയവീട്ടിൽ ക്ഷേത്രവും അതിലെ ഒറ്റമൂലച്ചിയുടെ ചരിത്രവും അറിഞ്ഞു. ഞങ്ങളുടെ ബോട്ടിന്റെ സാരഥിയായ അശോകൻ ചേട്ടന് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനെ കുറിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ 100 നാവായിരുന്നു. മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെ പതനസ്ഥലമായ പഴുക്കാനിലക്കായലും ദിവാനായ സർ മാധവ് റാവു നിർമ്മിച്ച മൻറോ വിളക്കുമരവും അതിൻറെ ചരിത്രവും അറിഞ്ഞു.16km നേരെ പടിഞ്ഞാറു ആലപ്പുഴ വിളക്കുമരവും ഉണ്ട്. പുളിങ്കുന്നിനടുത്തുള്ള പെരുമ്പറയൻ സ്മാരകം പഴയ ഒരു അന്ധവിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ സ്മാരകമായി ഇന്നും പരിചരിക്കുന്നു. സമാനമായ ഒരു കഥയെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി തന്റെ സ്വന്തം കവിത ഞങ്ങളുടെ കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന മാത്യു ചിങ്ങവനം സർ ചൊല്ലുകയും ചെയ്തു.പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കായൽ നിലങ്ങളും കണ്ട് ചിത്തിരക്കായലിൽ കൃഷിക്കാർക്ക് വേണ്ടി മുരിക്കൻ നിർമ്മിച്ച പള്ളിയും കണ്ട് ( ഇവിടെ ആരാധന ഇല്ല എങ്കിലും മെഴുകുതിരി കത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടു) മീനച്ചിലാർ പുത്തൻതോട് സംഗമസ്ഥാനവും കണ്ട് തിരിച്ച് അഞ്ചരയായപ്പോൾ കോടിമത ബോട്ട് ജെട്ടിയിൽ എത്തി. വിജ്ഞാനത്തോടൊപ്പം വിനോദവും( കായലിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര തന്നെ വിനോദമല്ലേ ) കലർന്ന യാത്രയിൽ പ്രഭാതഭക്ഷണവും കൂടെ കിട്ടിയ പ്രകൃതിദത്തമായ ജ്യൂസും കരിമീൻ കൂട്ടിയുള്ള ഉച്ചയൂണും ഈ യാത്രയുടെ മാറ്റുകൂട്ടി. ഇതിന് സൗകര്യമൊരുക്കിയ Roots & Roads ന് നന്ദി

കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ഗ്രാമമായ ചെമ്മനാ കരിയിൽ പല കല്യാണങ്ങൾക്കും ബോട്ടിലാണ് പോകാറ്. അന്ന് ബോട്ട് യാത്രക്ക് വേണ്ടി കാത്തിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. വലിയ ബോട്ടിൻ്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് വിശേഷങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നവർ, മറ്റൊരു ഭാഗത്ത് ചീട്ടുകളിയിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ട് രസിക്കുന്നവർ ...... അന്നത്തെ കല്യാണ യാത്രകൾ രസമായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പിന്നീട് ബോട്ട് യാത്രകളെന്നാൽ കടത്ത് ബോട്ടുകൾ മാത്രമായി. കഴിഞ്ഞയാഴ്ച പ ള്ളിക്കോണം രാജീവ് സാറിൻ്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ കായൽ പഠനയാത്ര പുതിയ ഒരനുഭവമായിരുന്നു. വെള്ളത്താൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്ന ചെമ്മനാ കരിയിൽ ജനിച്ച് വളർന്ന ഞാൻ ഒരു ബോട്ട് യാത്രക്ക് വേണ്ടി ജോലിസ്ഥലമായ കോഴിക്കോട് നിന്ന് വരുന്നത് കേട്ട് എൻ്റെ വീട്ടുകാർ അത്ഭുതപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും എനിക്ക് എങ്ങനെയും ആ യാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കണം എന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കായൽ നിലങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി വായിക്കുകയും പഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന പല സംശയങ്ങളും ഈ യാത്രയിൽ പരിഹരിക്കുവാൻ സാധിച്ചു. ഏഷ്യയിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും ബൃഹത്തായ കൃഷിയിടമായ ഇരുപത്തിനാലായിരം കായൽ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള കായൽ നിലങ്ങൾ നേരിട്ട് കാണുവാൻ സാധിച്ചു. പെരുമ്പറയൻ സ്മാരകം ഉൾപ്പടെ പല ചരിത്രപ്രധാന സ്ഥലങ്ങളും കണ്ടു. ഭക്ഷണവും വളരെ നന്നായിരുന്നു.

ROOTS & ROADS ജൂലൈ 25 ന് നടത്തിയ കുട്ടനാട് പഠനയാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തത് സന്തോഷകരവും വിജ്ഞാനപ്രദവുമായ ഒരനുഭവമായി.പതിവു കായൽ യാത്രയിൽ നിന്ന് വിഭിന്നമായി കായൽ നിലങ്ങളുടെ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രവും ചരിത്രവും കൃത്യമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് യാത്ര ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ കായൽക്കാഴ്ചകൾക്ക് മിഴിവേറിയെന്നുള്ളതാണ് സത്യം. ഇതു വരെ കണ്ണിൽപ്പെടാതെ കിടന്ന കായലോരപാറപ്രദേശവും , ആരാധനാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും , ആമ്പൽപ്പാടങ്ങളും, മുൻപ് പല വട്ടം കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലാത്ത നദീമുഖങ്ങളുമൊക്കെ അടുത്തു കണ്ട് പരിചയപ്പെടുവാനുള്ള അവസരം കൂടിയായി - ഈ യാത്ര. യാത്രയിലുടനീളം സ്ഥലപുരാണവും ചരിത്രവും കലർത്തി വളരെ താല്പര്യത്തോടെയും , ഉത്സാഹത്തോടെയും സുഹൃത്ത് പള്ളിക്കോണം രാജീവ്‌ നൽകിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന വിവരണങ്ങൾ യാത്രാനേരങ്ങളെ ഏറിയ തോതിൽ സജീവമാക്കി.യാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തവരെല്ലാം തന്നെ യാത്രയുടെ വിനോദമൂല്യത്തിനൊപ്പം തന്നെ പഠനമൂല്യവും മനസ്സിലാക്കി എത്തിയവരായിരുന്നു താനും.അവർക്കിടയിൽ മൂന്നു നാല് പാട്ടുകാരും ഉണ്ടായത്-ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ അരങ്ങൊന്ന് കൊഴുപ്പിക്കാനും സഹായകമായി. കായൽപ്പുറം എന്ന കുട്ടനാടൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ കായലും കരയും കൂടിക്കലർന്നതു പോലുള്ള ഭൂപ്രകൃതി കൗതുകകരമായ കാഴ്ചയായി. അവിടുത്തെ പെരുംപറയൻ സ്മാരകം സന്ദർശിച്ചത് കുട്ടനാടിന്റെ കാർഷിക ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ആഴക്കാഴ്ച ലഭിച്ച പ്രതീതിയും നൽകി. കായലോരത്തെ ഉൾനാടൻ ഭക്ഷണ ശാലകളിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭ്യമാക്കിയ തനത് നാടൻരുചിയുള്ള വിഭവങ്ങളും യാത്രയുടെ ഗൃഹാതുര സ്വഭാവത്തിന് ഇണങ്ങുന്ന വിധത്തിലുള്ളതായിരുന്നു . അന്നേ ദിവസം കാലാവസ്ഥയും ഞങ്ങളോട് കരുണ കാട്ടി. കർക്കിടക മാസമായിരുന്നിട്ടും പകലന്തിയോളം ആകാശം തെളിഞ്ഞു കിടന്നു . ഉച്ച നേരം മുതൽ സുഖകരമായ കായൽക്കാറ്റും വീശിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.നാലഞ്ച് ഇടങ്ങളിൽ വച്ച് വലിയ പക്ഷിക്കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ കാണാനുമൊത്തു.മഴക്കാലമായതിനാൽ കായലോര വൃക്ഷ സസ്യാദികൾ കൂടുതൽ തഴച്ചും പച്ചച്ചും കാണപ്പെട്ടു. ROOTS AND ROADS ന്റെ യാത്രാ സംരംഭങ്ങൾ മംഗളകരമായി തുടരട്ടെ എന്നാശിക്കുന്നു. ആശംസിക്കുന്നു. ഒപ്പം പിന്തുണയും അറിയിക്കട്ടെ.

The Journey: Roots and Roads was a heritage tour that began at Kodimatha Boat Jetty on July 25, with a mission to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the history, culture, natural heritage, and changing landscapes of Lake Vembanad and its surrounding regions. The safari began at 9:00 AM, as our boat set out through the serene waters of the Kodur River. As we moved along, the landscape unfolded beautifully on either side, with lush green fields creating a peaceful contrast to the waterways. The journey took us past the historic Travancore Cement Factory and beneath the New Bypass Bridge, offering glimpses of both the region's industrial past and its changing modern landscape. Adding great depth to the journey was our curator and renowned Kottayam historian, Palikkonam Rajeev, who brought the past alive through fascinating stories and historical narratives. He spoke about the erstwhile Thekkumkoor royals, their old capital at Thalikotta, the emergence of the Thazhathandi market, and the vibrant business and trade activities of those times. His narration transformed the boat journey into a journey through history, helping us visualize the people, places, commerce, and traditions that shaped the region. One of the fascinating historical sights was an 19th-century lighthouse at Pazhukkanila near Pallom. The area around the lighthouse is known as Kappalchal, a name that itself evokes the region's maritime past. The lighthouse stood as a striking reminder of the historical relationship between the waterways, navigation, settlement, and trade of this landscape. The journey also opened a fascinating window into the geological history of the region. We were told that areas extending towards Kaduthuruthy and Perunnai were once influenced by the sea, before the landscape gradually transformed into the riverine and agricultural environment we see today. Local accounts of seashells being found during well excavation add an intriguing dimension to this story. More broadly, geological research in the Kuttanad–Vembanad region records substantial subfossil shell deposits and evidence of marine and fluvial sedimentation, supporting the idea of major environmental changes in the region over geological time. The journey also introduced us to the remarkable network of rivers connected with the Vembanad system. The destinations of rivers such as Pampa, Meenachil, Manimala, and Kodurar were pointed out, helping us understand how these waterways come together to form the larger hydrological and cultural landscape of the region. Our next stop was particularly intriguing—a Gothra temple, situated amidst a remarkable cluster of large stones that appeared distinctly different from the surrounding terrain. The setting, surrounded by nature and silence, created a sense of mystery and connected us with traditions and cultural practices that have survived through generations. From there, the boat carried us towards another spectacular sight—a vast field filled with water lilies. The expanse of blooming lilies against the green landscape and calm waters created a breathtaking view. At a distance, we were also shown Valiaveettil Devi temple associated with Saktheya origins near the Malarikkal area, close to Thiruvarp. It offered yet another glimpse into the deep cultural and historical layers of the region. A particularly enlightening part of the journey was learning about the kayals of Kuttanad and how large stretches of the lake were transformed into agricultural fields. We heard about the pioneering efforts behind the reclamation of kayal lands, including Marthandam, Chithira, and Rani kayals, as well as the alphabetic blocks formed across the vast lake and converted into productive agricultural landscapes. The stories of the pioneers who undertook these extraordinary reclamation efforts were especially fascinating. The contributions of Peasants and the story of Joseph Murikkan were also discussed, giving a deeply human dimension to the history of Kuttanad's transformation from water-dominated landscapes into some of Kerala's most remarkable agricultural fields. Kuttanad's below-sea-level farming system and its reclaimed agricultural landscapes are well documented as an important feature of the region. We also visited an old church that is no longer functioning, associated with the story of Murikkan and his wife, and were shown the cemetery believed to be connected with them. Such places, though quiet today, preserve memories of people and communities that contributed to the history of the region. By noon, the journey had worked up a hearty appetite, and we were treated to a scrumptious local fish lunch. The meal itself became part of the experience, offering an authentic taste of the local food culture and adding warmth to an already memorable day. The boat itself had a story to tell. We travelled in the approximately 70-year-old boat Vijayalakshmi, whose history is intertwined with that of its philanthropic owner. Knowing the story behind the vessel made the journey even more special—it was not merely a means of transportation, but itself a part of the heritage we were exploring. On the return journey, we travelled through Puthanthodu before heading back towards Kodimatha. Along the way, the boat made a memorable stop at an old tea stall beside the riverbank. Sitting by the water and enjoying a simple, classy cup of tea offered a beautiful pause—a moment when the pace of the journey slowed down and the charm of the old riverine life could truly be appreciated. We finally reached Kodimatha Boat Jetty at around 5:30 PM, bringing to an end a day that had travelled far beyond the ordinary idea of a boat safari. Roots and Roads was much more than a tour. It was a journey through time, nature, culture, agriculture, rivers, geology, and human enterprise. It revealed how the waterways of Vembanad have shaped the lives, livelihoods, trade, traditions, and landscapes of generations. From ancient temples and historic lighthouses to reclaimed kayals, old boats, riverside tea stalls, local cuisine, geological clues, and stories of pioneering individuals, every stop carried a piece of history. For me, it was a truly worthy and enlightening experience—perhaps one of the most enriching journeys I have undertaken in the last decade. It reminded me that heritage is not confined to monuments and museums; it lives in our rivers, fields, boats, food, places, people, geological traces, and the stories that continue to connect us with our roots.

2026 ജൂലൈ 16 ന് റൂട്ട്സ് ആൻഡ് റോഡ്സ് സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച വേമ്പനാട് കായൽ പഠനയാത്ര ഒരു വേറിട്ട അനുഭവം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. വേമ്പനാട് കായലിന്റെ ഓരോ ഭാഗത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പള്ളിക്കോണം രാജീവ് വിശദീകരിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങൾ ധാരാളം പുതിയ അറിവുകൾ നേടിത്തന്നു. കൂടാതെ മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെയും കൊടൂരാറിന്റെയും വശങ്ങളിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര മറക്കാനാവാത്തത് തന്നെയാണ്. ഒരു ബോട്ടിൽ, ഒരു കുടുംബം പോലെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത എല്ലാവരുമായി പരിചയപ്പെടാനും സൗഹൃദം പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുവാനും സാധിച്ചു. വിജ്ഞാനവും കൗതുകവും ഉണർത്തുന്ന (മറ്റു ചിന്തകളെല്ലാം മാറ്റിനിർത്തി), ഈ 9 മണിക്കൂറോളം വരുന്ന യാത്ര എന്നും ഓർമ്മയിൽ ഉണ്ടാവും. ഉച്ചയൂണിന് ശേഷം അല്പം സംഗീതവും ആസ്വദിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു. ഇതിന് പിന്നിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ച റൂട്ട്സ് ആൻഡ് റോഡ്സിലെ എല്ലാ സംഘാടകരോടും പ്രത്യേകം നന്ദി പറയുന്നു.

Roots & Roads ന്റെ ജൂലൈ പതിനാറിനുള്ള വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായൽ പഠനയാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുവാനുള്ള അവസരം എനിക്ക് കിട്ടി. വേമ്പനാട്ടുകായൽ എന്ന് പറയുമ്പോൾ നീലക്കൊടിവേലി ഒഴുകിയിരുന്ന മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെ തീരത്ത് ജനിച്ചു വളർന്ന എനിക്ക് മീനച്ചിലാർ ഒഴുകി ചെല്ലുന്ന സ്ഥലം എന്നതാണ് മനസ്സിൽ ഉള്ളത്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും നീളം കൂടിയതും കേരളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ തടാകവും ഇതാണെന്ന് സ്കൂളിൽ പഠിച്ച ഓർമ്മ. ഇതായിരുന്നു എനിക്കറിയാവുന്ന വേമ്പനാട്ടുകായലിന്റെ ചരിത്രം. അതിലും ഒരുപാടൊരുപാടുണ്ടെന്ന് എന്ന് ഈ യാത്ര പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. രാവിലെ എട്ടരയ്ക്ക് കോടിമതയിൽ നിന്ന് യാത്ര തുടങ്ങി. കായൽ, ചിറ കെട്ടി കൃഷിക്കായി നിലമാക്കിയത് രാജീവ് സാർ വിശദമായി തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു തന്നു.എം സി റോഡിന് സമാന്തരമായി ജലത്തിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് അന്ത്യശ്വാസം വലിക്കുന്ന ട്രാവൻകൂർ സിമന്റ്സും കണ്ട്‌ മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെയും കൊടൂരാറിന്റെയും സംഗമസ്ഥാനവും കണ്ടു.പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ മേഖലയിൽ ഒരു കോട്ടയുണ്ടായിരുന്നെന്നും അതിൻറെ അവസാന ഭാഗത്ത് ഇപ്പോൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന മുത്തൻ മുത്തി (ഗോത്രവർഗ്ഗക്കാർ ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്ന) പാറയും കണ്ടു. ഈ കോട്ട എനിക്ക് വളരെ ഒരു അത്ഭുതമായിരുന്നു. തിരുവായ്ക്കരിപ്പാടശേഖരത്തിന് നടുവിൽ ഒരു ദ്വീപ് ഉണ്ടെന്നും അവിടെ വലിയവീട്ടിൽ ക്ഷേത്രവും അതിലെ ഒറ്റമൂലച്ചിയുടെ ചരിത്രവും അറിഞ്ഞു. ഞങ്ങളുടെ ബോട്ടിന്റെ സാരഥിയായ അശോകൻ ചേട്ടന് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനെ കുറിച്ച് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ 100 നാവായിരുന്നു. മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെ പതനസ്ഥലമായ പഴുക്കാനിലക്കായലും ദിവാനായ സർ മാധവ് റാവു നിർമ്മിച്ച മൻറോ വിളക്കുമരവും അതിൻറെ ചരിത്രവും അറിഞ്ഞു.16km നേരെ പടിഞ്ഞാറു ആലപ്പുഴ വിളക്കുമരവും ഉണ്ട്. പുളിങ്കുന്നിനടുത്തുള്ള പെരുമ്പറയൻ സ്മാരകം പഴയ ഒരു അന്ധവിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ സ്മാരകമായി ഇന്നും പരിചരിക്കുന്നു. സമാനമായ ഒരു കഥയെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി തന്റെ സ്വന്തം കവിത ഞങ്ങളുടെ കൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന മാത്യു ചിങ്ങവനം സർ ചൊല്ലുകയും ചെയ്തു.പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കായൽ നിലങ്ങളും കണ്ട് ചിത്തിരക്കായലിൽ കൃഷിക്കാർക്ക് വേണ്ടി മുരിക്കൻ നിർമ്മിച്ച പള്ളിയും കണ്ട് ( ഇവിടെ ആരാധന ഇല്ല എങ്കിലും മെഴുകുതിരി കത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടു) മീനച്ചിലാർ പുത്തൻതോട് സംഗമസ്ഥാനവും കണ്ട് തിരിച്ച് അഞ്ചരയായപ്പോൾ കോടിമത ബോട്ട് ജെട്ടിയിൽ എത്തി. വിജ്ഞാനത്തോടൊപ്പം വിനോദവും( കായലിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര തന്നെ വിനോദമല്ലേ ) കലർന്ന യാത്രയിൽ പ്രഭാതഭക്ഷണവും കൂടെ കിട്ടിയ പ്രകൃതിദത്തമായ ജ്യൂസും കരിമീൻ കൂട്ടിയുള്ള ഉച്ചയൂണും ഈ യാത്രയുടെ മാറ്റുകൂട്ടി. ഇതിന് സൗകര്യമൊരുക്കിയ Roots & Roads ന് നന്ദി

കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ഗ്രാമമായ ചെമ്മനാ കരിയിൽ പല കല്യാണങ്ങൾക്കും ബോട്ടിലാണ് പോകാറ്. അന്ന് ബോട്ട് യാത്രക്ക് വേണ്ടി കാത്തിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. വലിയ ബോട്ടിൻ്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് വിശേഷങ്ങൾ പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നവർ, മറ്റൊരു ഭാഗത്ത് ചീട്ടുകളിയിൽ ഏർപ്പെട്ട് രസിക്കുന്നവർ ...... അന്നത്തെ കല്യാണ യാത്രകൾ രസമായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പിന്നീട് ബോട്ട് യാത്രകളെന്നാൽ കടത്ത് ബോട്ടുകൾ മാത്രമായി. കഴിഞ്ഞയാഴ്ച പ ള്ളിക്കോണം രാജീവ് സാറിൻ്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടത്തിയ കായൽ പഠനയാത്ര പുതിയ ഒരനുഭവമായിരുന്നു. വെള്ളത്താൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട് കിടക്കുന്ന ചെമ്മനാ കരിയിൽ ജനിച്ച് വളർന്ന ഞാൻ ഒരു ബോട്ട് യാത്രക്ക് വേണ്ടി ജോലിസ്ഥലമായ കോഴിക്കോട് നിന്ന് വരുന്നത് കേട്ട് എൻ്റെ വീട്ടുകാർ അത്ഭുതപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും എനിക്ക് എങ്ങനെയും ആ യാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കണം എന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കായൽ നിലങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി വായിക്കുകയും പഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന പല സംശയങ്ങളും ഈ യാത്രയിൽ പരിഹരിക്കുവാൻ സാധിച്ചു. ഏഷ്യയിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും ബൃഹത്തായ കൃഷിയിടമായ ഇരുപത്തിനാലായിരം കായൽ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള കായൽ നിലങ്ങൾ നേരിട്ട് കാണുവാൻ സാധിച്ചു. പെരുമ്പറയൻ സ്മാരകം ഉൾപ്പടെ പല ചരിത്രപ്രധാന സ്ഥലങ്ങളും കണ്ടു. ഭക്ഷണവും വളരെ നന്നായിരുന്നു.

ROOTS & ROADS ജൂലൈ 25 ന് നടത്തിയ കുട്ടനാട് പഠനയാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തത് സന്തോഷകരവും വിജ്ഞാനപ്രദവുമായ ഒരനുഭവമായി.പതിവു കായൽ യാത്രയിൽ നിന്ന് വിഭിന്നമായി കായൽ നിലങ്ങളുടെ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രവും ചരിത്രവും കൃത്യമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് യാത്ര ചെയ്തപ്പോൾ കായൽക്കാഴ്ചകൾക്ക് മിഴിവേറിയെന്നുള്ളതാണ് സത്യം. ഇതു വരെ കണ്ണിൽപ്പെടാതെ കിടന്ന കായലോരപാറപ്രദേശവും , ആരാധനാ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും , ആമ്പൽപ്പാടങ്ങളും, മുൻപ് പല വട്ടം കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ലാത്ത നദീമുഖങ്ങളുമൊക്കെ അടുത്തു കണ്ട് പരിചയപ്പെടുവാനുള്ള അവസരം കൂടിയായി - ഈ യാത്ര. യാത്രയിലുടനീളം സ്ഥലപുരാണവും ചരിത്രവും കലർത്തി വളരെ താല്പര്യത്തോടെയും , ഉത്സാഹത്തോടെയും സുഹൃത്ത് പള്ളിക്കോണം രാജീവ്‌ നൽകിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന വിവരണങ്ങൾ യാത്രാനേരങ്ങളെ ഏറിയ തോതിൽ സജീവമാക്കി.യാത്രയിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തവരെല്ലാം തന്നെ യാത്രയുടെ വിനോദമൂല്യത്തിനൊപ്പം തന്നെ പഠനമൂല്യവും മനസ്സിലാക്കി എത്തിയവരായിരുന്നു താനും.അവർക്കിടയിൽ മൂന്നു നാല് പാട്ടുകാരും ഉണ്ടായത്-ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ അരങ്ങൊന്ന് കൊഴുപ്പിക്കാനും സഹായകമായി. കായൽപ്പുറം എന്ന കുട്ടനാടൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ കായലും കരയും കൂടിക്കലർന്നതു പോലുള്ള ഭൂപ്രകൃതി കൗതുകകരമായ കാഴ്ചയായി. അവിടുത്തെ പെരുംപറയൻ സ്മാരകം സന്ദർശിച്ചത് കുട്ടനാടിന്റെ കാർഷിക ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ആഴക്കാഴ്ച ലഭിച്ച പ്രതീതിയും നൽകി. കായലോരത്തെ ഉൾനാടൻ ഭക്ഷണ ശാലകളിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭ്യമാക്കിയ തനത് നാടൻരുചിയുള്ള വിഭവങ്ങളും യാത്രയുടെ ഗൃഹാതുര സ്വഭാവത്തിന് ഇണങ്ങുന്ന വിധത്തിലുള്ളതായിരുന്നു . അന്നേ ദിവസം കാലാവസ്ഥയും ഞങ്ങളോട് കരുണ കാട്ടി. കർക്കിടക മാസമായിരുന്നിട്ടും പകലന്തിയോളം ആകാശം തെളിഞ്ഞു കിടന്നു . ഉച്ച നേരം മുതൽ സുഖകരമായ കായൽക്കാറ്റും വീശിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.നാലഞ്ച് ഇടങ്ങളിൽ വച്ച് വലിയ പക്ഷിക്കൂട്ടങ്ങളെ കാണാനുമൊത്തു.മഴക്കാലമായതിനാൽ കായലോര വൃക്ഷ സസ്യാദികൾ കൂടുതൽ തഴച്ചും പച്ചച്ചും കാണപ്പെട്ടു. ROOTS AND ROADS ന്റെ യാത്രാ സംരംഭങ്ങൾ മംഗളകരമായി തുടരട്ടെ എന്നാശിക്കുന്നു. ആശംസിക്കുന്നു. ഒപ്പം പിന്തുണയും അറിയിക്കട്ടെ.

The Journey: Roots and Roads was a heritage tour that began at Kodimatha Boat Jetty on July 25, with a mission to create a deeper understanding and appreciation of the history, culture, natural heritage, and changing landscapes of Lake Vembanad and its surrounding regions. The safari began at 9:00 AM, as our boat set out through the serene waters of the Kodur River. As we moved along, the landscape unfolded beautifully on either side, with lush green fields creating a peaceful contrast to the waterways. The journey took us past the historic Travancore Cement Factory and beneath the New Bypass Bridge, offering glimpses of both the region's industrial past and its changing modern landscape. Adding great depth to the journey was our curator and renowned Kottayam historian, Palikkonam Rajeev, who brought the past alive through fascinating stories and historical narratives. He spoke about the erstwhile Thekkumkoor royals, their old capital at Thalikotta, the emergence of the Thazhathandi market, and the vibrant business and trade activities of those times. His narration transformed the boat journey into a journey through history, helping us visualize the people, places, commerce, and traditions that shaped the region. One of the fascinating historical sights was an 19th-century lighthouse at Pazhukkanila near Pallom. The area around the lighthouse is known as Kappalchal, a name that itself evokes the region's maritime past. The lighthouse stood as a striking reminder of the historical relationship between the waterways, navigation, settlement, and trade of this landscape. The journey also opened a fascinating window into the geological history of the region. We were told that areas extending towards Kaduthuruthy and Perunnai were once influenced by the sea, before the landscape gradually transformed into the riverine and agricultural environment we see today. Local accounts of seashells being found during well excavation add an intriguing dimension to this story. More broadly, geological research in the Kuttanad–Vembanad region records substantial subfossil shell deposits and evidence of marine and fluvial sedimentation, supporting the idea of major environmental changes in the region over geological time. The journey also introduced us to the remarkable network of rivers connected with the Vembanad system. The destinations of rivers such as Pampa, Meenachil, Manimala, and Kodurar were pointed out, helping us understand how these waterways come together to form the larger hydrological and cultural landscape of the region. Our next stop was particularly intriguing—a Gothra temple, situated amidst a remarkable cluster of large stones that appeared distinctly different from the surrounding terrain. The setting, surrounded by nature and silence, created a sense of mystery and connected us with traditions and cultural practices that have survived through generations. From there, the boat carried us towards another spectacular sight—a vast field filled with water lilies. The expanse of blooming lilies against the green landscape and calm waters created a breathtaking view. At a distance, we were also shown Valiaveettil Devi temple associated with Saktheya origins near the Malarikkal area, close to Thiruvarp. It offered yet another glimpse into the deep cultural and historical layers of the region. A particularly enlightening part of the journey was learning about the kayals of Kuttanad and how large stretches of the lake were transformed into agricultural fields. We heard about the pioneering efforts behind the reclamation of kayal lands, including Marthandam, Chithira, and Rani kayals, as well as the alphabetic blocks formed across the vast lake and converted into productive agricultural landscapes. The stories of the pioneers who undertook these extraordinary reclamation efforts were especially fascinating. The contributions of Peasants and the story of Joseph Murikkan were also discussed, giving a deeply human dimension to the history of Kuttanad's transformation from water-dominated landscapes into some of Kerala's most remarkable agricultural fields. Kuttanad's below-sea-level farming system and its reclaimed agricultural landscapes are well documented as an important feature of the region. We also visited an old church that is no longer functioning, associated with the story of Murikkan and his wife, and were shown the cemetery believed to be connected with them. Such places, though quiet today, preserve memories of people and communities that contributed to the history of the region. By noon, the journey had worked up a hearty appetite, and we were treated to a scrumptious local fish lunch. The meal itself became part of the experience, offering an authentic taste of the local food culture and adding warmth to an already memorable day. The boat itself had a story to tell. We travelled in the approximately 70-year-old boat Vijayalakshmi, whose history is intertwined with that of its philanthropic owner. Knowing the story behind the vessel made the journey even more special—it was not merely a means of transportation, but itself a part of the heritage we were exploring. On the return journey, we travelled through Puthanthodu before heading back towards Kodimatha. Along the way, the boat made a memorable stop at an old tea stall beside the riverbank. Sitting by the water and enjoying a simple, classy cup of tea offered a beautiful pause—a moment when the pace of the journey slowed down and the charm of the old riverine life could truly be appreciated. We finally reached Kodimatha Boat Jetty at around 5:30 PM, bringing to an end a day that had travelled far beyond the ordinary idea of a boat safari. Roots and Roads was much more than a tour. It was a journey through time, nature, culture, agriculture, rivers, geology, and human enterprise. It revealed how the waterways of Vembanad have shaped the lives, livelihoods, trade, traditions, and landscapes of generations. From ancient temples and historic lighthouses to reclaimed kayals, old boats, riverside tea stalls, local cuisine, geological clues, and stories of pioneering individuals, every stop carried a piece of history. For me, it was a truly worthy and enlightening experience—perhaps one of the most enriching journeys I have undertaken in the last decade. It reminded me that heritage is not confined to monuments and museums; it lives in our rivers, fields, boats, food, places, people, geological traces, and the stories that continue to connect us with our roots.

2026 ജൂലൈ 16 ന് റൂട്ട്സ് ആൻഡ് റോഡ്സ് സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച വേമ്പനാട് കായൽ പഠനയാത്ര ഒരു വേറിട്ട അനുഭവം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു. വേമ്പനാട് കായലിന്റെ ഓരോ ഭാഗത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പള്ളിക്കോണം രാജീവ് വിശദീകരിച്ച കാര്യങ്ങൾ ധാരാളം പുതിയ അറിവുകൾ നേടിത്തന്നു. കൂടാതെ മീനച്ചിലാറിന്റെയും കൊടൂരാറിന്റെയും വശങ്ങളിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര മറക്കാനാവാത്തത് തന്നെയാണ്. ഒരു ബോട്ടിൽ, ഒരു കുടുംബം പോലെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത എല്ലാവരുമായി പരിചയപ്പെടാനും സൗഹൃദം പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുവാനും സാധിച്ചു. വിജ്ഞാനവും കൗതുകവും ഉണർത്തുന്ന (മറ്റു ചിന്തകളെല്ലാം മാറ്റിനിർത്തി), ഈ 9 മണിക്കൂറോളം വരുന്ന യാത്ര എന്നും ഓർമ്മയിൽ ഉണ്ടാവും. ഉച്ചയൂണിന് ശേഷം അല്പം സംഗീതവും ആസ്വദിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു. ഇതിന് പിന്നിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ച റൂട്ട്സ് ആൻഡ് റോഡ്സിലെ എല്ലാ സംഘാടകരോടും പ്രത്യേകം നന്ദി പറയുന്നു.
