Explore the rich history and cultural heritage of Kottayam town
A journey through Kottayam town, tracing the history and cultural legacy that shaped the city. The tour will be flagged off at 7:30 AM at the Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple compound by R. Padmanabha Rao, great-grandson of Diwan T. Rama Rao — widely celebrated as "the architect of modern Kottayam." The journey with a visit to the Aksharam Museum in Nattakom.
The tour begins in Old Kottayam, the historic core that developed under the Thekkumkur dynasty around Thalikotta from the 15th century onward, taking travelers through its ancient marketplaces, places of worship, and historical monuments. From there, the journey moves to Thirunakkara, tracing the growth of modern Kottayam from the 19th century, including several institutions that laid the foundation for education and printing in the region. The day concludes at the Aksharam Museum, which chronicles the history of printing, language, and literature. The group will be limited to a maximum of 42 participants, traveling by air-conditioned bus. Some stretches of the route are not accessible by bus, so participants should be prepared to walk roughly 1.5 km on foot during the tour. Lunch will be arranged separately by the organizers. The bus will be ready to depart at 7:00 AM from the Baker Memorial GHSS ground, Kottayam.
