കോട്ടയത്തെ ചെട്ടിത്തെരുവ് അറിയാമോ?

The name Chettitheruvu — once home to the Chetty trading community until about 200 years ago — will likely be unfamiliar to the newer generation. Chettitheruvu was the street that ran on either side of the old country road connecting the eastern regions to Thaliyanthanapuram (Thalikkotta), old Kottayam town, stretching from Annankunnu to Chaliyakunnu. Today, this place-name survives only in the name of the CMS College L.P. School. The single remaining reminder of Chettitheruvu is the signboard at the school's entrance, on which the place-name "Chettitheruvu" is written.

When Colonel Munro, Dewan of Travancore, handed over this area for the activities of English missionaries, the Chaliyar community — weavers by trade — moved away from Chaliyakunnu, and the Chetty traders moved away from Chettitheruvu. A large share of these communities left the area altogether, while those who remained settled in other parts of Kottayam.
